PREPARE FOR DETOURS ON THE WEST GATE FREEWAY THIS SUMMER

    Date:

As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project’s works to widen the Freeway from eight to 12 lanes, there will be an intensive program of summer construction activities from Tuesday 11 January to Monday 28 February 2022.

Drivers on the West Gate Freeway are being encouraged to plan ahead for delays and detours. We will close the following ramps and roads to provide crews safe worksites to carry out vital, around-the-clock works that will take us another step closer to improving travel times in and out of the city for Melbourne’s west:

    • M80 Ring Road ramp to Princes Freeway (Geelong-bound)
    • West Gate Freeway outbound exit ramp to M80 Ring Road (Greensborough-bound)
    • Williamstown Road inbound entry ramp to the West Gate Freeway
    • Williamstown Road inbound exit ramp from the West Gate Freeway (until Feb 14)
    • West Gate Freeway inbound lane above Williamstown Road
    • Williamstown Road in both directions under the West Gate Freeway (until Feb 14)

Detour routes will be in place for these closures and drivers are advised to also seek alternate routes.

CEO of the West Gate Tunnel Project, Major Transport Infrastructure Authority, Peter Sammut thanked drivers in advance for their patience when driving along the West Gate Freeway.

“While the works may be disruptive, we are reminding drivers to slow down and take extra care on the road this summer.”

“To ensure all drivers and workers get home safely, there will be times where there are reduced speed limits, which are also in place to assist drivers to navigate changed traffic conditions,” Mr Sammut said.

Coinciding with the typically quieter roads during the summer holiday period, the construction blitz is designed to minimise impacts on road users, local communities, and businesses.

The works will focus on bridge strengthening and foundation works, demolition and re-building the road, barrier installation and drainage works. These works are part of constructing four additional through lanes on the West Gate Freeway between the M80 Ring Road and the West Gate Bridge.

Mr Sammut added, “While there will be substantial impacts with the closure of Williamstown Road underneath the West Gate Freeway, restaurants, local shops and larger retailers will still be open for business, so please continue to support local businesses in the area.”

Where possible, avoid travelling in peak periods, take an alternative way to avoid works, consider taking public transport where available or consider working from home if appropriate.

There will be fully signed detours in place, however, stay up to date with all detours on Victoria’s Big Build Disruptions page and the West Gate Tunnel Project’s Facebook page.

    1. Would it be too much to ask for some Ballarat or Western Ring road signs to be displayed ?
      No idea where to go.
