Victorian Law Week is a statewide program which promotes community-based events where people can learn about the law and how the legal system can help them in various situations. Understanding your legal rights can be difficult to navigate without assistance, and the aim of these community events is to inform individuals and raise awareness on protecting one’s rights.
During the upcoming Law Week in May, Yarraville Community Centre will be hosting three FREE workshops which will be delivered by the community organisation WEstjustice. WEstjustice provides free legal help to eligible people in the western suburbs of Melbourne that range from family law, family violence, tenancy agreements, consumer disputes and more. The three workshops will be held at YCC’s Francis Street location, as well as its Victoria Street premises. Topics will cover areas of employment equality, scam awareness and understanding tenancy rights and responsibilities. These issues will have touched people within the community on some level, where they may have been uncertain as to what action to take or what legal aid was available. Promoting legal literacy is significant for all of us, but particularly important within the CALD community due to potential language barriers. The law and its processes don’t discriminate against people and every community member should have access to legal education and information within Australia.
These free workshops at YCC are open to all community members and will be presented by industry legal professionals from within WEstjustice, where attendees will be able to gain valuable information and ask questions.
By hosting these informative seminars, YCC plays a crucial role in enhancing public understanding of the law and promoting access to justice for everyone.
Information times, dates and locations of these seminars can be found on the Yarraville Community Centre website under Law Week.
