Well, we made it. One hundred issues. A mighty achievement for a little community newspaper powered by volunteers.
It’s testament to the community spirit ingrained in us Westies and the do-it-ourselves mentality that’s come from decades of neglect. I have a feeling that in tough times ahead we’re going to be needing that mentality in bucket loads.
We couldn’t have reached this milestone without the help and dedication of literally hundreds of volunteers, far too many to name them all here, and the support of our partners; Bendigo Community Bank Seddon, Victoria University, Footscray Community Arts, Yarraville Community Centre,Transurban, and Sun Theatre. You’re all bloody champions!
I do want to call out Derek Green for special mention. Derek held the helm at the editor’s desk for seven years and helped shape the Westsider into what it is today and I’m thrilled he still wants to contribute. I think you’re going to love his ‘View From The Balcony’ this month.
And also Kelly Kane, whose initial vision for a newspaper, written by and for community, sparked this whole wonderful experiment. I can think of no other paper quite like it and Kelly is truly amazing, still working hard on the edges to help us out. Love you Kelly!
This month we bring you a deep dive into the findings of state parliament’s Environmental Planning Committee’s report into the devastating 2022 floods and their impact on Victorian communities, especially here in the west. It’s made over 70 recommendations for government to consider and makes for a great read.
Also of particular interest, especially for those of us who are getting old, is an exploration of senior citizen centres, and whether they’re fit for purpose for the new generation of oldsters.
And of course we have our delicious westie recipes, our very own westie crossword, and Dear Westie – our resident guru who tackles any modern dilemma you may have. I dare you. Ask Dear Westie a curly one. The answer will surprise you.
So Happy 100th Edition Westsider! And thanks to all of you who’ve supported us throughout the years. There’s a special place up there for you. xxx
