A new era of growth at Yarraville Community Centre

Date:

The Yarraville Community Centre (YCC) is celebrating a remarkable milestone this year – its 50th anniversary. For five decades, YCC has been a vital hub for the local community, providing a diverse range of services from educational short courses, childcare, community projects, food relief and more.

Over this time, the center has adapted to the changing needs of the community, empowering people of all ages with its educational and digital literacy programs, while addressing immediate social needs through food relief. With the recent appointment of new CEO Jessie Deane, Yarraville Community Centre is poised for transformation and growth. Through strategic initiatives and collaborative partnerships, the center is excited to embark on this new chapter embracing change whilst honoring its rich legacy of services.

Jessie spent the last 15 years working in local government at Hobsons Bay City Council across a range of areas, and prior to that has managed a number of arts organisations. Through this work she has an established track record of developing and nurturing strong relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and securing funding for sector-wide projects. Jessie has overseen several large-scale Capital Works projects including technical fit outs, heritage building and theatre renovations.

Jessie is also a multi award winning artist who is known for her needlepoint depictions of the Industrial and suburban landscapes of Melbourne’s west and was awarded the Civic Art Award in 2024 by Maribyrnong City Council for her artistic contribution to the city.

Jessie’s leadership brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, aiming to expand the center’s impact. Jessie has already made significant strides by upgrading the computer facilities at its Victoria Street premises, ensuring students have access to modern technology. The enhancement not only improves the learning environment but also equips students with the tools necessary to engage effectively with current software and online platforms.

Keep an eye on Yarraville Community Centre’s social media announcements for its 50th anniversary celebrations later this year where all community members are invited to its jubilee festivities.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
