    By Jess Lilley

Footscray West Writers Fest is a brand new event on Melbourne’s cultural calendar set to transform Barkly Street into a vibrant hub of writers, readers and storytelling.

From poetry readings over a morning coffee, to a local walking tour of West Footscray’s back streets, to an evening in a pizza restaurant listening to writers telling stories about the West – a range of ticketed and free events will take place across public spaces and in local businesses in a celebration of storytelling unique to Melbourne’s west.

With the artistic vision, ‘only in the West’, the program is being curated by local non-profit organisation, West Footscray Arts, in collaboration with local writers. It promises to be a wholly original, dynamic and unforgettable new event on Melbourne’s literary and cultural landscape.

Footscray West Writers Fest is organised by West Footscray Arts and supported by the City of Maribyrnong, with support from The Westsider and Community Bank Seddon (Bendigo Bank).

Running from Friday March 28 to Sunday March 30 in 2025, programming and ticketing info is available at westfootscrayarts.org.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
