Does someone you love have dementia?

Finally, there’s some good news. A new group has formed called The Hobsons Bay Dementia Soaring Falcons Alliance.

The Alliance is hosting a pioneering Dementia Forum in March at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre. Interested community members are welcome to meet, and then enjoy morning tea provided by the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Altona Branch.

Passionately motivated to make a difference for those with dementia and their carers, each founder has a unique story behind their desire to make positive change happen. Co-founder, Dementia Australia Advocate Natalie Ive, who is living with dementia says the Alliance aims to foster a dementia-friendly community that is inclusive and welcoming. “Our first event is this Forum. We want to bring people together to share their journey, learn more, gain tips, share resources and start a plan to make Hobsons Bay truly dementia-friendly,” she says.

Wellbeing expert Dr Liz Cyarto joined because her mum lived with dementia for over 15 years. “I want to ensure people living with dementia, and those who support them, have the best quality of life for as long as possible,” says Dr Cyarto.

Other founders represent families, local leaders like former Mayor Sandra Wilson, and business owner Charlene Borg of Fitness for Her.

Ms Borg says she’s proud to be part of this new Alliance. “Science shows that being physically active benefits the body and protects the brain,” she says.

Forum attendees will learn about community resources including six tailored exercise sessions for those living with dementia. The forum and these exercise classes are supported by The Hobsons Bay Community Fund, The Lions Club of Altona and The Rotary Club of Altona City.

Natalie Ive’s daughter, Daniela Kotevski, is deeply moved by the community’s generosity. “Assistance from Hobsons Bay City Council staff and yummy food provided by CWA Altona Branch lifts us all as we work to make things better.”

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
