PICTURING FOOTSCRAY IS TAKING IT TO THE STREETS

    By Kannagi Bhatt

Last year Victoria University held its sixth annual Picturing Footscray competition – a free open-entry photography prize with a focus on Footscray.

Photographers of all capabilities were invited to capture Footscray’s vibrant community spirit and 115 participants submitted incredible images showcasing everything from Footscray’s impeccable food culture to iconic local characters to moments of connection through lockdowns.

To celebrate, Victoria University in the Community has brought a selection of entries to the streets of Footscray. The Picturing Footscray street exhibition is sprawled across 54 poster spaces on the corner of Albert and Paisley Streets and features 2021’s best entries including the winning images.

The exhibition is on until 12 February 2022 – come along to see how last year’s entrants captured Footscray’s heart and soul and unique sense of community through photos.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
