An economic revolution is taking place right here in the western suburbs. It’s called the ‘do good’ economy and has the potential to address a range of problems plaguing our society; inequality and environmental destruction for starters.
It’s a sustainable form of capitalism first touted by Thomas Hobbes in the1600s which focuses on inclusive growth and shared prosperity. Driving the ‘do good economy’ revival in the West is Local Impact, one of The Westsider’s primary partners.
Last month Local Impact hosted the inaugural Gather For Good event. Among the guests were a range of local social enterprises; Green Collect, West Welcome Wagon, Akea, Social Traders to name just a few.
It was an inspired gathering full of optimism and purpose. Everyone in the room was committed to the same idea; that we can make the world a better, more equitable place by investing in individuals, businesses, and programs designed to benefit society, as well as turn a profit.
There is a plethora of social enterprises in the west that need your support. Consider shopping with them, eating at their restaurants, volunteering with them, donating to them, telling others about the good work they do.
