Taylor, a local hairdresser and socialist activist, will be contesting Point Cook for the Victorian Socialists at the November state election, pledging to fight to expand and make public transport free, provide 5 days a week free childcare, and implement a state bank to reduce the cost of home loans.
“I am running because the major parties’ inaction on the necessary things people need to live their lives has gone on for too long,” said Taylor. “We (workers) have been told that this is just how politics works, that these things are just too hard to do. Victorian Socialists will fight to change this narrative, and deliver change that will prioritise people over profit.”
Taylor, a hairdresser and union member, has been a worker at a local salon for a number of years. Through their campaign, they aim to be the voice for workers struggling on stagnant wages, and for young people who will inherit the broken system which is the cause of the housing crisis, climate change, lack of affordable healthcare and so many other problems.
Taylor has a strong connection and drive to delivering improvements to the west’s struggling public transport network. They have had to deal with the increased car dependency that is being pushed in the west, with infrastructure massively lagging behind the rapid growth of the area. This is why Taylor and Victorian Socialists are fighting to return Victoria’s public transport network back into public hands and deliver on expanding the infrastructure that exists, allowing workers to be able to move freely in their lives without having to take on the financial burden of a car.
Early childhood education is also very important to Taylor, living with their housemate who is an educator in the industry. A child’s first few years are a vital part of development, and everyone deserves to have access to quality, free early childhood education. Taylor is committed to pushing for free, 5 days a week childcare, in order to allow for everyone to have the ability to foster their child’s growth and development.
“Living and working in long standing Labor seats, I think it’s important to have a candidate stand that will challenge the status quo in parliament, and will unwaveringly fight to put the needs of workers before those of massive corporations and billionaires,” Taylor said upon announcing their candidacy.
