ART AGAINST AGEISM CHALLENGING NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES

    Date:

    By Merilyn Bert

Ageism affects both young and old in the community. Older individuals are often asked to step aside to make way for the younger generation, and younger generations are too often dismissed as ‘snow flakes’.

But here are some qualities admired in both young and old!

    • Humour: makes us laugh and feel good.
    • Kindness: Kind people are caring, generous, and helpful to others.
    • Wisdom: Wise people have knowledge, experience, and good judgment.
    • Integrity: People with integrity are honest, trustworthy, and ethical.
    • Bravery: Brave people are selfless, courageous, and strong in facing challenges.

In an invitation to challenge attitudes about older people the annual Art Against Ageism competition is on again. Organised by the Australian Multicultural Community Services this important initiative invites one to reconsider labels; to be open and generous. To see wisdom and experience in elders; to be humble and accept, admire even, different presentations of technical proficiency, different ways of seeing and concepts of beauty, and different ideas of emotional power.

    Viva la Différences!

There are awards for a variety of categories including Painting, Drawing, Photography, Graphic Design, or AI-generated imagery.

As a proud and active member of U3A Maribyrnong I’d encourage everyone to support this initiative. The submission deadline is 10 September 2023.

Upload your art to amcservices.org.au/artagainstageism/ Alternatively, you can email your artwork to marketing@amcservices.org.au.
